THE suicide rate in a region north of Brisbane is almost double the national average but a new program hopes to help those struggling get their lives back on track.

Australian Bureau of Statistics data revealed Redcliffe’s suicide rate between 2012 and 2016 was 17.6 per 100,000 people, one-and-a-half times higher than the national average of 11.74.

The rate in Caboolture was 15.2, while it was 16.7 in Strathpine.

It was much lower outside the Moreton Bay Regional Council region. Wynnum had a rate of 10 per 100,000 people and Kenmore 7.6.

Brisbane North Primary Health Network (PHN) which covers the Moreton region, has been given $800,000 of federal funding to launch beyondblue’s The Way Back program at Redcliffe Hospital.

The program will offer personalised support to people discharged from Redcliffe Hospital following a suicide attempt.

Statistics show one-quarter of the people who attempted suicide tried again within the first three months after being discharged.

Yet more than half of those discharged from hospital received no support or follow-up treatment in that time.

Beyondblue chief executive Georgie Harman said The Way Back program filled the gap, providing non-clinical one-on-one care to help people through the critical three months.

Ms Harman said this included access to psychologists, community services and a job or volunteering opportunities.

The program was rolled out in Darwin in 2014.

It has since been implemented in several cities in NSW and Canberra.

“The Way Back helps people to stay safe and find their way back to living, to keep connected with others and to access health and community services as part of their recovery,” Ms Harman said.

“We have had 1400 referrals to the program across Australia.

“We have not lost anyone.”

Brisbane North PHN executive manager Paul Martin said research showed “Redcliffe has the greatest need in our region for suicide prevention support”.

The program will be run by Mental Illness Fellowship Queensland, with the help of beyondblue.

MIFQ chief executive Jennifer Pouwer said the aim was to help people reclaim their life.
