Take a sneak peak into PCYC Redcliffe’s expansion

After two years of intense campaigning and fundraising efforts, PCYC Redcliffe will launch its much-needed 150 sqm expansion next week.

Redcliffe PCYC extension

After two years of intense campaigning and fundraising efforts, PCYC Redcliffe will launch its much needed 150 sqm expansion next week.

The non-for-profit organisation takes in 10,000 visitations per month and provides the community with a safe place to exercise six days a week, 52 weeks of the year.

But PCYC Redcliffe chairman Noel Powell said the demand for activities has meant they’ve had to turn people away in recent years.

“The reason we did the extension was because we had an outstanding wait list for things like trampolining, judo, boxing, gymnastics and other community groups who’d like to make use of our facilities,” he said.

“We built to cater for Redcliffe, but we have another city being built in North Lakes and an awful amount of people who want to come from Sandgate and other regions because of the quality of coaching staff.”

“We have one of the strongest trampoline and gymnastics programs in Queensland … we have 700 kids at Redcliffe PCYC and two national champions.”

The build will feature a new gymnastics space, corridor and reception area to cater for the almost 200 children who are currently missing out on programs.

Mr Powell said the new space will also cater for the hundreds of elderly people and community groups that use the facilities weekly.

“When kids are doing activities it contributes to their health … but it’s not just for them. It’s for everyone in the community,” he said.

“We cater for three-year-olds to people in their 90s, right across the spectrum.”

All levels of government have combined to make the project happen after a campaign that was led by the Redcliffe & Bayside Herald in 2016.

Moreton Bay Regional Council contributed $200,000 and the state government $100,000 for stage one of the project, while federal member for Petrie Luke Howarth secured $450,000 to finish complete construction.

Work has been done by local builders Cornerstone Building Developments.

PCYC Redcliffe was first established in 1966.
