A Brisbane woman’s attempt to take a ‘holiday’ and visit her long-term girlfriend in prison didn’t go exactly to plan, despite her ‘aggressive episode’ at Chermside Shopping Centre.
Tahlia Lee Boyce appeared at Sandgate Magistrates Court on Thursday February 10, via video link from behind bars.
She pleaded guilty to committing public nuisance, .
The court heard the 28-year-old had a lengthy criminal history and had been in and out of jail for large chunks of her adult life.
On January 10, 2022, police were called to an incident at Chermside Shopping Centre.
The court heard Boyce, from Chermside, was blocking one of the shopping centre entries and having an ‘aggressive episode’.
She was yelling at customers, swearing, harassing people, and even kicked over a bin.
When she was approached by a shopping centre cleaner and asked to calm down she became even more aggressive and yelled and swore at the cleaner, the court heard.
When police arrived at the shopping centre Boyce demanded they take her to prison right away, or else she would ‘hold up a nearby servo’.
The court heard she was verbally and physically aggressive with police and kept demanding to be sent back to prison.
She was eventually arrested and taken into custody.
The court heard Boyce was struggling to secure employment or volunteer work because of her lengthy criminal history and that she was missing her girlfriend who was in prison.
The court heard because of Covid-19 she had been unable to visit her girlfriend.
In an attempt to ‘take a holiday and have a break from real life’ with her girlfriend, Boyce decided to create the scene at Chermside Shopping Centre, the court heard.
However, this didn’t go exactly to plan for Boyce who ended up in a different prison to her girlfriend.
The court heard that because of Covid-19 restrictions Boyce was unable to be moved to the same prison as her romantic partner.
After only a month behind bars on her ‘holiday from the real world’ and with no romantic rendezvous in sight - Boyce was convicted, not further punished, and released from custody.
