Sunshine Coast community mourns 14-year-old Finn Constable

“The world lost a beautiful bright spark’’: A Sunshine Coast family and school community is grieving after the sudden death of a beloved “sweet young man’’ earlier this week.

A Sunshine Coast family and school community is grieving after the sudden death of their “sweet young man’’ just before his 15th birthday.

Mountain Creek’s Finn Constable passed away in Sunshine Coast University Hospital on Tuesday (May 9), leaving his parents Megan and Dyllan and brother Ash, 11, in shock.

His best friend since primary school, James Fletcher, 15, and other friends and relatives were also left devastated.

James’ mother, Natalie Fletcher, said the weekend before his death Finn and his mates were at her home.

Finn, James and their eight closest friends, all students at Mountain Creek State High School, spent Sunday indoor rock-climbing and playing nerf gun fights.

“Finn really wanted to watch (Hollywood movie) Fight Club, but they ran out of time,” Mrs Fletcher said.

To celebrate what would have been Finn’s 15th birthday, James and his friends have vowed to get together to watch Fight Club in honour of their best friend, on Monday, May 15.

“It’s a terrible shocking tragedy. He was this happy straight A student,” Ms Fletcher said.

“So well loved and kind. Everyone who knew him is just reeling.

“We can’t fathom his death and it’s been really hard for his friends and school mates to process.

“He was really popular and well known so it’s affected a lot of them.”

Known as a good-natured goofball by his friends, family, and school, Finn will be missed by many.

“He was so lovely and polite, very well mannered,” Ms Fletcher said.

“At school he was in all of the programs for high achievers. So smart.

“He was such a considerate, kind, thoughtful and supportive big brother too.”

Finn had aspirations of becoming a coder or computer programmer and in was teaching himself how to code.

“He was such a bright button,” Ms Fletcher said.

“So sensitive too, with a lot of big feelings. He always thought of others and would do things without being asked, like unpacking the dishwasher.

“Finn was the sort of kid you wanted your kids to be friends with. Always a delight to have over.”

He also loved animals, especially his two ragdoll cats.

Ms Fletcher said he was known among his friends for remembering random fun facts and jokes.

“He was always smiling and fun to be around. It’s just so hard to believe that now he’s gone,” Ms Fletcher said.

“I was folding washing today and there was a pair of his shorts there and it just hit me.

“His family is beautiful and strong but they’re really going through it.”

After witnessing the family’s grief, Ms Fletcher wanted to do something to help.

She started a GoFundMe page to raise money for the funeral, which raised more than $11,000 in the first 24 hours.

“There’s only so many casseroles we can all send around,” Ms Fletcher said.

“The response has been incredible. Kids are donating $5 or more of their hard-earned pocket money. One kid donated $3000.

“We all want Finn back but supporting his family is the next best thing.”

“The world lost a beautiful bright spark that day, and his family will need all the support we can give them over the coming days, weeks … forever,” it read.

“The impact of losing such a brilliant, big-hearted and sweet young man is too much to fathom.

“The last thing this family needs right now is financial worries on top of everything else.

“One thing we can all do to help is to relieve them of some of this financial strain.

“Finn and his beautiful family deserve the very best. Please donate what you can.”

The principal of Mountain High State School, Brian Parr, sent out a letter to Year 10 parents and caregivers about the tragedy, offered the school’s condolences and ongoing support for all students.

Funeral details are yet to be arranged.
