The State Government has today confirmed where four new satellite hospitals will be built across southeast Queensland.

Building the satellite hospitals at Caboolture, Pine Rivers, Redlands, the Gold Coast, Bribie Island, Ripley and Brisbane Southside was an election commitment from the State Labor Party prior to the election.

The State Government announced a site Bongaree as its ideal location for the Bribie Island facility in June.

Today it has revealed where it hopes to build the Caboolture, Pine Rivers, Redlands and Gold Coast facilities.

A 1.3ha space at Rowe St, almost behind the existing Caboolture Hospital, is the preferred site for the Caboolture satellite hospital.

Caboolture Hospital is currently undergoing a $394 million makeover. Another $10 million medical centre is under construction across the road.

A 1.5ha parcel of land on Dohles Rocks Rd, Kallangur has been earmarked as the future home of the Pine Rivers facility.

Space will be cleared at Meissner St at Redland Bay within the Weinam Creek Priority Development Area has been identified for the Redlands Coast hospital and Boyd St, Tugan has been identified as the preferred site for the Gold Coast facility.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the four parcels of land were ideal locations for the health hubs.

“This is all about investing in health and investing in infrastructure,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

“Satellite hospitals will take pressure off our health system by easing the demand on major hospitals and also support hundreds of jobs for Queenslanders.

“Caboolture, Redlands, Pine Rivers and the Gold Coast are among seven areas where satellite hospitals are being built to under our $265 million election commitment.

“This is the first time this has been done in Australia, and it will bring new and improved health services to the heart of growing local communities”

Health Minister Yvette D’Ath said the new satellite hospitals would help take pressure off nearby emergency departments.

“Caboolture, Redlands, Pine Rivers and the Gold Coast have all experienced significant growth in recent years, and that has seen increased demand for health services,” Mrs D’Ath said.

“Now is the right time to invest in additional infrastructure to make sure the residents in these growth corridors continue to get quality health care.”

The State Government is yet to confirm what services will be offered at each of the satellite hospitals – it could range from community health services, day therapy such as renal dialysis, chemotherapy, complex wound management, urgent care for minor injury and illness and outpatient activities.

Mrs D’Ath said a business case for the satellite hospital program was being prepared to determine what will be offered at each location.

“The economic benefits will be significant with the satellite hospital program to support up to 773 local jobs as it’s rolled out,” she said.

Construction is expected to take around 12 months following completion of the business case and acquisition of land.
