Drivers had to divert other commuters to save them from driving straight into a sinkhole which opened up on a busy bayside road this week.
A driver discovered the sinkhole on Endeavour Esplanade, Scarborough, near Redcliffe, and pulled over to direct traffic and pedestrians until police arrived.
Cleveland local, Andrew Waller, said the 3m-wide sinkhole could have killed someone.
“For a pedestrian, it could have been life threatening,” Andrew Waller said.
“It looked pretty deep considering the road surface had completely disappeared into the water.”
The sinkhole had formed at the edge of the road, in the middle of a bicycle lane.
“A bike could have easily fallen into it as it was on a corner and would have appeared quickly in front of them,” Mr Waller said.
“And if a car hit it trying to turn the corner it would have probably done serious damage to the car.”
Emergency services were called and arrived in a record six minutes to fix the major traffic issue.
A spokesman from the office of Local MP, Hon Yvette D’Ath, said issue had been rectified.
“I have attended Endeavour Esplanade to investigate and it appears that the pothole/sinkhole in question has been filled,” the spokesman said.
The cause of the sinkhole is still unknown.
“It is currently assumed this was caused by the recent weather events and persistent rain.”
