Real beer v craft beer taste test

A new microbrewery, restaurant and bar with views across the water and out to the Glasshouse Mountains is just months away from opening north of Brisbane.

Husband and wife team Guy and Sonia Schweitzer have been working for three years to bring their dream alive.

Mr Schweitzer is a part owner of a civil engineering company but it was his love of craft beer that led them to open their own brewery.

Plans for the new venture at Scarborough Harbour were approved by Moreton Bay Regional Council in November 2020.

Mrs Schweitzer said they had searched for years to find the perfect location to set up Scarborough Harbour Brewing Co.

The new microbrewery will be set up in the renovated Waters Edge, a two-storey building, at Bird O’Passage Pde, which previously doubled as a seafood manufacturing business and function centre.

“We love the atmosphere of breweries, with a great vibe, great beer and great food,” Mrs Schweitzer said.

“For many years, we searched for locations to open our brewery and we wanted somewhere unique.

“Where we are opening is right on the Scarborough Harbour Marina – looking out over the water and not far from our own doorstep.

“The sunsets over the marina are priceless.”

The bottom floor of the venue will be transformed into a microbrewery, restaurant and bar.

Under council regulations the brewery will be able to produce up to 300,000 litres a year.

A new indoor and outdoor dining and drinking areas will be built along with a brewing room, bar and kitchen.

Upstairs will get a minor makeover including a new servery and amenities.

So far the downstairs renovation is well progressed and the brewing tanks and equipment have arrived as well.

The bar and seating areas are still under construction but Mrs Schweitzer said they expected to open the doors early next year.

Up to 30 jobs are expected to be created including hospitality, sales, marketing, wholesaling, production and brewing roles.

Mrs Schweitzer said head brewer Sam Nunnikhoven joined the team in October 2020 and had already brewed a number of fabulous beers.

“We hope to cater for everyone. We will brew great beers onsite served with great food,” she said.

“You can expect burgers, beer batters chips and all types of beer centric bites to match perfecting with our brews.

“We envisage our venue will be a destination people will travel to from all over Brisbane as well as from up or down the coast.”

Plans are also in the works to include an events schedule featuring local talent.

“The intention is for locals to be part of something big here at the Peninsula’s very own brewery,” Mrs Schweitzer said.

“It is in an amazing location, and we want to share it with the everyone.

“Add fantastic craft beer brewed on site, amazing food and service and you have the perfect recipe for a great brewery.”
