Ricky Stimson: Caboolture man jailed for DV choking, assault

A roofer who bashed and choked a woman three times in one day - including in one very public incident that required police intervention - has been sentenced to three years’ jail, but is likely to leave custody next week.

Australia's Shame: Horrifying trend in violence against women

A roofer from north of Brisbane has gotten his first taste of life behind bars after he battered and choked a woman three times in a day, including once at the local shops.

Rocksberg man Ricky Scott Stimson, 27, pleaded guilty in Brisbane District Court on Thursday to five violent offences related to his treatment of his victim.

They included three counts of choking and two of common assault.

All offences occurred on November 8 last year at Rocksberg.

Following an argument in the morning, Stimson choked his victim until she collapsed on the ground, then picked her up and launched her onto a bed where he continued choking her.

Later that morning, the pair went to the local shopping centre, where Stimson feinted a punch, before slapping the woman in the face and choking her again until police intervened.

A police protection notice was put in place but this was breached later in the afternoon when Stimson, driving with his victim in the passenger seat, headbutted her, pushed her head repeatedly into the window, then choked her until her vision darkened and she felt like throwing up, the court heard.

Once back home, Stimson “ran at” his victim while armed with a tyre iron, forcing the woman to seek refuge with a passer-by.

Stimson then followed her to the local police station, where he attempted to refute his disgraceful treatment of her.

He has been remanded in pre-sentence custody since that day, a total of 389 days, his first period behind bars.

Defence counsel Tom Polley told the court his client had a “tumultuous” upbringing marred by his parents’ drug use.

He said his client fell into methamphetamine use and addiction following three deaths in his family in proximity to each other.

Mr Polley said this led to bouts of homelessness suffered by his client.

It was on the streets he met his victim, who was also an alleged drug user, the court heard, and the pair were living in a caravan at the time of the offending.

Mr Polley said his client worked as a roofer with his uncle for many years and had an offer of employment at his brother’s flooring company upon release.

Judge Katherine McGinness sentenced Stimson to three years’ imprisonment with immediate release on parole.

However, Stimson will not be released until next week at the earliest, as he has outstanding matters in the Magistrates Court.
