Residents call for yellow lines and marked parking bays as hospital parking nightmare continues

The parking problem in streets surrounding this busy hospital is so out of control that residents have been left stuck in their homes unable to get to work or medical appointments. But residents say there is a simple fix.

Redcliffe Hospital parking nightmare

A lick of paint – that is what residents say is needed to fix the chaotic parking situation in streets surrounding the Redcliffe Hospital.

Parking in the streets surrounding the busy hospital has been an issue for years but the problem has not improved since the new $23.7 million multistorey carpark opened in September.

Moreton Bay Regional Council handed out triple the number of infringement notices since the new carpark, which is no longer free, opened.

Parking costs start at $5 for those staying 1-2 hours, with all day parking capped at $13.

A resident, who lives in a street surrounding the Redcliffe Hospital, said the situation had been out of control for more than two years.

They are pleading for council to approve and provide designated formalised parking bays as well as solid yellow lines on the corners to bring awareness of the existing road rule of not parking closer than 10m from an intersection without lights.

A Moreton Bay Regional Council spokesman said council was investigating the impact of the new paid for hospital parking on surrounding streets.

“Council will make a decision to remove or add further parking restrictions once conditions settle and there is a reduction in complaints made by residents regarding off-street parking matters in the area,” the spokesman said.

The resident, said they had been stuck in their home on multiple occasions due to cars being parked across the driveway.

“I’ve had to get alternative transport to work because I can’t get my car out,” the resident said.

“I’m sick of it.”

The resident said she had no problem with hospital visitors and staff parking in the street – so long as they did it legally.

“It is not just the inconvenience of not being able to get out of my driveway it is a safety issue,” they said.

They said “inconsiderate selfish drivers” were making it “unnecessarily difficult” for residents.

The resident wasn’t the only one either.

Mandy Irvin said on the Herald Facebook page that she could “never get out of her driveway”.

Lisa Beeching said it was difficult to get out of her driveway without hitting cars parked on both sides of the road.

Despite multiple meetings, phone calls and messages with the local councillor and council officer the resident said nothing had been done.

“It is ridiculous that the council are not doing anything about it,” the resident said.

“It is an accident waiting to happen.”

The new multistorey carpark at Redcliffe hospital has increased parking capacity by 50 per cent – but it now comes at a cost for users.

A poll conducted by the Redcliffe Herald on Facebook found 194 residents thought the fees to park at Redcliffe Hospital were too high.

Just 89 thought the prices were fair.

“Everyone knew this would not solve the issue of illegal street parking,” the resident said.

“I was told by council they would be putting in parking bays when the carpark opened. Then it was we are waiting until the new carpark has been open for a few weeks and now I’ve been told they are waiting another month.
