Redcliffe reels from flooding as Bribie Island evacuated

“We now have raw sewage coming back up our pipes” — Redcliffe residents have been hit by flooding today as emergency services evacuate parts of Bribie Island.

 Clontarf Flooding

Residents from the western side of Bribie Island are evacuating as flooding from relentless rainfall threatens their homes.

According to Queensland Police, homes on the island have been affected by floodwaters with the high tide.

“It is not known at this time how many homes have been affected,” they said.

They urged sight seers around Sylvan Beach to stay home.

“The presence of these people are interfering with the evacuation process.”

“Making the job even more difficult are those who choose to disregard the signs, traffic controllers and police and drive into flood water.”

Meanwhile, residents on the bayside streets of Clontarf and Woody Point are reeling after flash flooding inundated homes and garages this morning.

Woody Point resident Abbey Filko said the impact had been devastating.

“There is water now in our bedroom coming up from the carpet … there was so much water in our backyard which has flooded our laundry, the garage is goodness knows how much under water.

“We managed to save most of the furniture on the patio.

“We now have raw sewage coming back up our pipes, which is absolutely disgusting, with no idea how to stop it.

“I’m just waiting for emergency assistance, and we’ve joined the queue for insurance claims.”

Another resident on Wendy Crescent at Clontarf watched on as floodwaters rose through her property.

“It all happened in the space of half and hour — very quickly,” she said.

“The storm water drains clogged the street and the storm just dumped insane amounts of rain, backyards filled up very fast — all of a sudden about half a was under the house.”

The deluge on Brisbane’s northern bayside totalled about 150mm in one-and-a-half hours, joining 300mm dumped on the area earlier this morning.

Photos of streets throughout Redcliffe are revealing devastating sites for homes and local businesses alike, with water flowing through buildings, including Sutton Street in Redcliffe’s key trading area.
