The community has rallied to raise thousands of dollars to help a heartbroken mother cover the cost of a funeral for her 22-year-old son who died in a three-car crash, alongside his best friend, on Sunday.

Angus Barnes and Mitch Harpley, 22 and 20, were travelling in a car along the D’Aguilar Highway at about 3.45pm on March 21.

Initial investigations from the forensic crash unit indicate the car travelling west on the highway collided with two utes travelling in the opposite direction.

The driver of the car, Mitch, and his passenger Angus died at the scene.

Three other men travelling in the utes were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Herald understands that Mitch was helping Angus move when the crash occurred.

A family friend of the Barnes family Kyra Patterson has started a GoFund Me campaign to raise money to help cover the funeral cost.

“His funeral will be a financial strain for his single mum. If you know Anita you know she always gives to everyone else,” Ms Patterson wrote on the GoFund Me page.

“Please help me make this heartbreak not a financial burden as well.”

In less than 24 hours the campaign has raised more than $7400 – well above the $3000 Ms Patterson had hoped to raise.

Maggie Barnes, Angus’ sister, made a moving post on social media.

“It is with broken hearts that we have to say that our brother, son, grandson, cousin and best mate Angus Liam Barnes has tragically passed away (on Sunday),” she wrote.

“The loss of Angus has devastated us all. Fly high big bro, you’ll forever be in my heart.”

His mum Anita Barnes wrote: “I love you forever my son”.

“Angus was a beautiful soul who touched the lives of so many people, his passing will leave a huge hole in so many of our lives,” she wrote.

Friends also took to social media to share kind words about the former Redcliffe State High School student.

“Angus was a great guy, always willing to help all of us out even after graduating. We will all miss him,” wrote Jamie-Lee Bone.

Pam Woolford described Angus as a “a warm, kind and funny person towards many people, both young and old. He will truly be missed and forever remembered.”

The family of Mitch Harpley also made touching tributes on social media.

His brother Lachlan said the roads took an angel.

“He meant more to me then anything in this world,” he wrote.
