After a year off the field Redcliffe Dolphins 2018 premiership winning captain Cameron Cullen “can’t wait” to don the red and white again next year.

Cullen was forced to miss out this season after tearing his ACL during a charity touch football match in February.

“It was my first surgery in my whole career,” Cullen said. “I’ve been quite lucky with injuries considering I’ve been playing a high contact sport for as long as I have.”

Cullen said the nature of the injury meant the recovery time had been “long and slow”.

“It is a process, you can’t really speed it up,” he said.

“I’m starting to ramp things up now and get my fitness back on track in time for pre-season.”

But it was not the countless physio and rehab sessions that Cullen found hardest.

“Mentally, the hardest thing was watching the boys play every week,” he said.

“Missing out on a full season is something I’ve never done since I started playing footy in under-5s.”

Cullen said the excitement of getting back out on the field outweighed any concerns he had about re-injuring his knee.

“I did my knee just after Toby Rudolph did (former Dolphins player) and he is absolutely killing it at the moment. I spoke to Toby and he said he couldn’t even tell when he went back on the field, said he hadn’t thought about it once,” Cullen said.

“So that has filled me with confidence.”

Cullen will be playing alongside a number of new faces when he rejoins the team for pre-season next month.

“We should have a really good squad this year and with the grand final being played at Dolphin Stadium that will be the ultimate goal for us,” he said.

When not in a rehab session or watching the Dolphins play Cullen was working as a real estate agent alongside Andrew Riebelt.

Cullen said he planned to juggle his new career with his footy career next season.
