A teenager has faced court after smashing cars while on a destructive rampage through the streets of Bribie Island.

Andrew Guireh Brooks, 18, faced Caboolture Magistrates Court on August 16, charged with obstructing police officer, trespassing or unlawfully enter or remain in dwelling or yard and two counts of wilful damage.

The court heard that on July 31, 2022, Brooks was one of four men police described as being aged between 20-25, yelling out and smashing property along a street in Woorim in the middle of the night.

Police prosecutor Tia Herd said the police were called 13 times by members of the public and when they arrived on scene, they were met by residents out on the street, bins turned upside down with rubbish all over the street and damaged vehicles.

“Police spoke with the public who outlined the four offenders were yelling abuse at an occupant and entered a dwelling yard of a unit complex, throwing rubbish and tools that had been removed from a nearby ute,” Ms Herd said.

Directed by members of the public, police drove towards the waterfront where they found Brooks and the three other men running into bushland, the court heard.

An intoxicated Brooks and the others ran further into the bushland but Brooks was caught and arrested by police.

The court heard the driver’s side mirror of a parked ute was smashed, the passenger side dented and tools were taken out of the tray and thrown onto the street.

A Toyota Camry’s passenger side mirror was also smashed and a dent was made on the driver’s side.

Brooks defence lawyer Liz Schonknecht said Brooks was heavily intoxicated and found it hard to recall the events.

Ms Schonknecht said Brooks had just started a plastering apprenticeship after completing Year 11 at Bribie Island State High School last year.

In handing down his sentence, Magistrate Peter Hasted told Brooks this needs to be his last time before the court.

“There are two ways your life can go after this appearance before the court today,” Mr Hasted said.

“You can keep coming back before the court and we’ll oblige you on the second, third or fourth appearance, you’ll go out that door there to a correctional facility.

“You’ll be housed and accommodate among violent criminals who will take advantage of you if you persist with this behaviour.

“Does your boss know why you’re here today?

“I bet he’s not too happy with what’s occurred with this type of behaviour.”

Brooks was placed on an 18-month good behaviour bond, with $1000 recognisance, ordered to complete a drug and alcohol course and pay $400 restitution for damage to the cars.

No conviction was recorded.
