Nicholas Oliver Cunningham pleads guilty to two charges after he was found with a knife and cocaine

A teenage military hopeful has been charged after police found him driving around with a knife and drugs north of Brisbane.

A teenage military hopeful has escaped conviction after he was found in possession of cocaine and a knife.

Nicholas Oliver Cunningham, 18, was charged with one count each of possessing dangerous drugs and possessing a knife if a public place.

The 18-year-old appeared at the Pine Rivers Magistrates Court on Tuesday where he pleaded guilty to both charges.

The court heard Cunningham, a navy applicant, was intercepted by police on August 10 this year on Gregory Rd at Mango Hill.

Officers then observed a homemade bong while speaking with Cunningham.

His car was then searched, it was then Cunningham admitted to police he had a quantity of cocaine in his bag.

“Police then located a small clip seal bag with a small quantity of white powder,” the police prosecutor told the court.

“The defendant also told police there was a knife in his bag, which was then located.

“When questioned he stated he purchased the knife from a tobacconist and was carrying it because it was similar in colour to a lighter he was gifted.”

The 18-year-old’s legal representative requested that Acting Magistrate Murray consider a good behaviour bond given the “small quantity” of drugs found.

The court was told it appeared “the knife was a mistake and ignorance rather than a deliberate attempt to either defend himself or use that particular knife.”

Acting Magistrate Murray was told Cunningham was remorseful for his actions and is employed full-time as a scaffolder.

The court also heard that Cunningham was in the process of joining the navy as an electrical technician.

The Acting Magistrate said he took into account Cunningham’s age and lack of prior history.

He was given a $250 good behaviour bond for four months.

No conviction was recorded.
