Enough dirt to fill two Olympic swimming pools was excavated every day for the past three years in order to build southeast Queensland’s newest lake.
The 22-hectare lake is part of Stockland’s $590 million Newport development, north of Brisbane.

Stockland acting Queensland general manager for residential David Laner said work started on the lake project in December 2015.
“Our vision for Newport has been built on creating a high quality community centred around this lake, so we are thrilled to see it now become a reality,” he said.
It has taken three weeks to fill the lake with one and a half billion litres of sea water.
Once complete it will hold the same amount of water as 1000 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
Mr Laner said 1.5 million cubic metres of soil was excavated to make way for the lake.
That soil was reused as fill around the development.
Private access will be available initially for lakeside residents of the Newport Quay precinct from early January.
“We are looking forward to completing landscaping on adjoining waterfront parkland early next year to allow the public to access the lake for non-motorised activities like kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding, as well as creating a great venue for barbecues and events,” Mr Laner said.
Residents of the Newport Retirement Village, currently under construction, will have views over the lake.
