A Moreton woman arrested for an alleged knife attack on her ex-partner has told a court she acted in self defence.
The woman, 44, who cannot be named, appeared in Pine Rivers Magistrates court today, February 13, in relation to charges of assault occasioning bodily harm while armed and in company.
The Moreton Bay woman appeared via video link from the Pine Rivers Watchhouse after being arrested for the attack on her ex-partner at his parent’s house.
The defendant’s lawyer, Farah Haddad, alleged his client was acting in self defence.
He told the court the defendant had come to drop off her mother-in-law’s jewellery when the victim, her ex-partner, ran into the yard and allegedly began attacking the defendant with a metal pole.
Mr Haddad told magistrate Annette Hennessy his client was “fearful for her life’’ when she reached for a knife and attacked the victim.
The incident was recorded on a mobile phone.
The court heard it was allegedly not the first time the defendant had been attacked by the victim.
Police prosecutor Mardi Nowitzki objected to an application for bail due to the seriousness of the assault and the use of the knife as a weapon.
But Ms Hennessy said cause was shown for bail because of the allegations of previous acts of violence and she accepted the woman might have been acting in self defence.
“The truth of this will come to light sooner rather than later,” Ms Hennessy said.
The woman was released on bail to appear in court on March 16.
