Moreton Bay Regional Council to put in place new parking measures surrounding Redcliffe Hospital

Parking fines have tripled since paid parking was introduced at this busy hospital prompting the local council to put more parking restrictions in place.

After years of lobbying residents in streets surrounding Redcliffe hospital are celebrating after council announced it would introduce new parking measures in a bid to stop the rise in illegal on-street parking.

Parking in streets surrounding Redcliffe Hospital has been an issue for years -but it has gotten worse since paid parking was introduced at the hospital in September.

Staff, visitors and patients have to pay just $5 for visits lasting 1-2 hours.

All day parking is capped at $13.

One of the cheapest rates in southeast Queensland.

To avoid the fee hospital patients, visitors and staff have taken to parking in surrounding streets – often illegally, blocking driveways and parking near corners and intersections.

Moreton Bay Regional Council said the number or fines issued for illegal parking in streets surrounding the hospital had tripled since September.

A resident, who lives in a street surrounding the Redcliffe Hospital, told the Herald, in October, she had been asking the council to install painted parking bays and yellow lines on the corners for several years.

A Moreton Bay Regional Council spokesman said, in October, council was investigating the impact of the new paid for hospital parking on surrounding streets.

RESIDENTS FEAR MORE CONGESTION WHEN PAID PARKING STARTS

“Council will make a decision to remove or add further parking restrictions once conditions settle and there is a reduction in complaints made by residents regarding off-street parking matters in the area,” the spokesman said.

The resident, who does not wish to be named, said that council has now dropped notices in all letterboxes advising that it would be installing parking bays and yellow lines next year.

The letter reads:

“Council has received several complaints from residents regarding vehicles parking across driveways and close to intersections in the area around the Redcliffe Hospital.

“To better manage parking in the streets surrounding the hospital council is proposing to formalise parking bays …”

The resident said it was a great result.

“Better late than never,” the resident said.
