Moreton Bay Regional Council has today approved a record $685 million budget in a bid to get the economy going post COVID-19.

The massive spend will come at a cost to ratepayers with bills set to increase on average by 2 per cent.

Mayor Peter Flannery said the budget spend was $30 million more than last year.

“Now is not the time for austerity as we face a recession, so council will continue to provide record investment in this year’s massive $685 million budget,” he said.

It was the first budget meeting for many of the councillors and Cr Flannery’s first as mayor.

“Preparations for this year’s budget have been like no other. As we all deal with the health and economic impacts of the coronavirus pandemic, council has maintained a laser-focus on charting a course to recovery,” Cr Flannery said in his address to council.

He said the budget aimed to provide certainty for jobseekers, part-pensioners, the environment, local businesses and employees and investors.

Across the region council will recruit 130 new employees and spend up to $220 million on capital works projects.

“Already council has faced this pandemic head-on by activating the Moreton Recovery Group and providing direct stimulus when and where it was required,” Cr Flannery said.

“We have dedicated $32.9 million in coronavirus stimulus measures designed to provide certainty for the most impacted groups and individuals in our community and to get our region booming again.”

Council has set aside $49 million for sport and recreation projects and $26 million for accelerated road resurfacing projects.

The budget also includes a $250,000 fast-tracked tourism strategy to investigation the hinterland’s tourism appeal and explore how the region can become the most accessible tourism destination in southeast Queensland.

Cr Flannery said the budget was all about recovery.

“Through responsible and targeted spending we will not only see our region through a global pandemic, we will also ensure Moreton Bay emerges as the envy of other southeast Queensland Councils,” he said.
