Police are still searching for a thief who stole an Australia Post delivery van and allegedly assaulted its driver at Deception Bay.

The driver suffered multiple head lacerations after the confrontation and was taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition.

A Queensland Police Service spokesman said investigations into the matter were ongoing.

Emergency services were called to the scene at Union Street and Windsor Place at around 1pm on Tuesday.

A member of the public called in the incident reporting a van had been stolen and had “almost run someone over”.

“A number of units are patrolling the area,” a police spokeswoman said on Tuesday.

Critical care paramedics were on board when the man was taken to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.

An Australia Post spokesman confirmed one of their postal delivery officers had been involved in an incident.

And that a delivery van had been taken.

“We’re working closely with Queensland Police as they investigate,” the spokesman said.

“We’re providing support to our postie and his family.”
