A 23-year-old aspiring veterinary nurse from Caboolture found herself on the wrong side of the law after being busted with drugs and riding around in a car that her boyfriend allegedly stole.

Kassandra Joy Boody pleaded guilty in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Friday to three charges.

The court heard she was busted for possessing dangerous drugs, unlawfully possessing a relevant substance or thing and unlawful use of a motor vehicle in Pimpama on August 27, 2021.

Boody’s lawyer said she had been a passenger in a stolen car but there was no evidence to suggest she was aware it had been stolen.

“This offending occurred … largely as a consequence of her being sentenced at Southport (court) and then going straight back into her boyfriend’s arms and then becoming involved in conduct that was serious, at least in the conduct that he engaged in, but involved her in more offending,” he said.

He said Boody fell into the drug-using scene when she moved to the Gold Coast from Mackay and ended up dropping out of school.

“Since then my client has weaned off the drugs that she was previously using,” he said.

He told the court she’s since taken steps to rehabilitate herself and moved away from Gold Coast to Caboolture in a bid to distance herself from associates there who are involved with drugs.

He said she had been involved in the Queensland Opioid Treatment Program and has plans to complete a Certificate III in Animal Studies and eventually move on to veterinary nursing.

Magistrate Ron Kilner warned Boody during sentencing that she had already been given a number of opportunities in the past by the court to rehabilitate and “get off the drugs”.

“Hopefully by now you appreciate that being addicted to and consuming illicit substances is only going to lead you down a further path of decline,” he said.

“You are really right on the cusp. You’ve had the benefit of suspended sentences, you’ve had the benefit of immediate parole before.

“What you haven’t suffered at this stage in terms of actual incarceration where you are locked up behind bars for a period of time.

“You continue committing these types of offences and sooner rather than later that’s what’s going to occur.”

She was sentenced to one-month imprisonment fully suspended for a period of three months.

She was also placed on probation for 11 months.
