A young tradie has faced court north of Brisbane after causing havoc for another driver as he tailgated them for 9km with his high beams on.
Kaleb Scott Barrie, 22 of Kallangur, pleaded guilty in Pine Rivers Magistrates Court on Tuesday, August 9 to unlicensed driving and driving without due care and attention.
The court heard a woman made a complaint to police about Barrie’s driving on Sunday, March 6, 2022, after he tailgated her the night prior.
About 10.15pm on Saturday, March 5, Mr Barrie was driving his white Nissan ute along Eatons Crossing Rd at Draper.
The court heard he was stuck behind another car, driven by the woman who reported him to police, and was frustrated by the speed she was travelling.
She was reportedly driving the speed limit of 80kmh since the winding road was known for dangerous blind spots and koala crossings.
But for the next 9km, she was left feeling frightened as Barrie tailgated her, following only one metre behind, with his high beam lights on.
The court heard he pulled out next to her, crossing double lines on the road, numerous times.
She told police she heard his tyres screech as he pulled in behind her car and braked hard to avoid running into her.
At one point Barrie even beeped his horn at the other driver and, while finally overtaking her, his passenger gave her the finger, the court heard.
Barrie’s lawyer, James Torcetti, told the court Barrie had picked his drunk mate up from the pub to drop him home.
Mr Torcetti told the court Barrie had been working as a concreter for five years and had no criminal history.
The court heard Barrie’s license had expired on February 12 this year and he had a long traffic history of speeding offences.
Magistrate Melanie Ho said Barrie was risking the lives of those on the road, including himself and his passenger.
“You were frustrated because you had a difficult passenger but it’s a dangerous road and you have to be patient,” Ms Ho said.
Barrie was fined $800 and had his license disqualified for one month. No convictions were recorded.
