Huge 1500 sqm discount fresh fruit and vegetable store brings job boost

A popular discount fruit and vegetable shop, the owner of which is known for splashing $20,000 for a tray of mangoes for charity, is expanding to a key Moreton Bay shopping centre.

Sam Etri’s generosity to purchase a $20,000 tray of mangoes at the Brisbane Markets and donate it to a hospital, saw him crowned King of the 2022 Mango season at the Brisbane Markets.

Mr Etri is planning to bring that same generosity to Rothwell when he opens Skippy’s Market Fresh at Rothwell Central shopping centre midway through November, with 30 jobs on offer.

Skippy’s Market Fresh will be a 1500 sqm fresh fruit and vegetable store, expanding on Mr Etri’s Skippy’s Fresh Frootz store in Victoria Point and Skippy’s Farmhouse in Southport.

Skippy’s focus is on sourcing fresh produce from local suppliers everyday and selling at a discounted price.

Seven-days-a-week Mr Etri is up at 4am to hand-pick the produce at the Rocklea Markets for delivery to the Victoria Point store.

“Everyday the fruits and vegetables are bought on the same morning that it’s in our stores,” Mr Etri said.

“Rothwell is a bigger store which is exciting.

“We’ll be able to get a lot of product in there and also reduce our prices.

“When you buy in volume at the Rocklea Markets you get cheaper prices because it’s less handling on either end.

“The northside is big area that we’ve had a look at and there’s nothing in the area that does fruit and veg the way we do and sell it at a competitive price, to help the public with the cost of living these days.”

Mr Etri said a lot of questions have been asked about what he did with a tray of mangoes valued at $20,000.

“That went to the hospital and I’ve donated them to the kids so the kids can enjoy it,” Mr Etri said.

“It means a lot knowing those funds are going to sick kids and the homeless.

“From loyal customers supporting us daily, it’s good to give back.”
