AN important piece of southeast Queensland history will be knocked down and replaced with a popular US burger restaurant, car wash and service station.

Redcliffe Produce was opened at Rothwell, just north of Brisbane, by the McCartney family 50 years ago.

The family sold the block, at the corner of Deception Bay and Morris roads, earlier this year and closed the doors in April.

Redcliffe Produce has closed down after 50 years of operating on the Redcliffe Peninsula.

It will be replaced with Rothwell Village, a new shopping precinct.

Synergy Property Partners’ Oscar Bayard is handling the leasing of the site and said there were three retailers locked in for the precinct, including US burger joint Carl’s Jr.

The burger chain opened its first Australian store last year and has plans to open another 20 in Queensland.

Carl’s Jr has more than 1300 stores worldwide including a food court outlet at Brisbane Airport.

The burger chain, which started in California, is known for its oversized burgers and ice-cream shakes.

A 7-11 service station and IMO car wash have also agreed to tenancies.

Mr Bayard said there were still shop spaces left, including two suitable for drive-through businesses and a 3000sq m lot for a bulky goods operator.

“There has been some pretty good interest in the retail spaces from food and medical operators,” Mr Bayard said.

While he would not give an exact date, Mr Bayard said construction would start this year.

The development application was delegated to Moreton Bay Regional Council staff and approved in September.

It was not voted on by councillors.

It is not the only development occurring in Rothwell, a suburb bordered by Kippa-Ring, Mango Hill and Deception Bay.

Stockland bought a 9.2ha block of land at Morris Rd, around the corner from the new shopping precinct, from Moreton Bay Regional Council, earlier this year.

It plans to build a housing estate with 140 lots.

A development application for the estate is yet to be lodged with the council.

By next year, the area will almost certainly look very different from when Redcliffe Produce first opened its doors 50 years ago.

Back then the area was surrounded by farms and dirt roads.
