The bikie connections of a 29-year-old Narangba concreter almost landed him in jail after he was caught with a “sinister” sawn-off shotgun.
Zach William Neilsen pleaded guilty to a string of offences including wearing a bikie club t-shirt and possessing weapons including the shortened shotgun as well as a rifle and knuckledusters.
He was also charged with multiple counts of drug driving and possessing drug utensils.
The court heard Neilsen’s drug addiction lead him to the wrong crowd and brought on a wave of crime which blemished an almost untarnished criminal record.
The offending, which took place over a seven-month period, came to a head after he was found with the sawn-off shotgun — which police prosecutor Sergeant Catherine Dryburgh said “would only ever be used for sinister purposes”.
The court heard, in Neilson’s defence, that the gun was hardly useful as it had been falling apart and scrappily held together.
An affidavit presented to Magistrate James Blanch on behalf of Neilson’s mother attested to her son’s character and told of how he had turned his life around since skyrocketing out of control.
“Mothers say those things,” the magistrate said.
“They forgive everything, up to a point."
Magistrate Blanch told Neilsen he was “bloody stupid’ for repeatedly being caught drug driving.
Neilsen pleaded guilty to the string of charges and was given a head sentence of 24 months probation, which would include drug testing.
