Five people charged after meeting at a beach carpark for drinks

Five people in one suburb north of Brisbane were each fined $1334.50 for breaking social distancing rules after meeting up for a drink or two.

Five people who decided to meet up a carpark by a beach north of Brisbane at the weekend have each been fined $1334.50.

Senior Constable Jo Arthur, of the Moreton Police district, said police received numerous calls in relation to people breaking social distancing guidelines and gathering restrictions across the region at the weekend.

Sen Const. Arthur said five people were fined and issued infringement notices after meeting up at the Woorim Beach carpark for an alcoholic beverage.

“A $1,334.50 fine was issued to each of the five people who attended,” she said.

“In these difficult times, police would prefer not to write these infringements but if people refuse to listen to the warnings and continue to disregard the messaging then they are left with no option to ensure the safety of all community members.

“If you are heading out and know you are not complying, then ask yourself these two questions.

“ ‘Can I afford a $1,334.50 fine right now?’ and more importantly, ‘Am I willing to put other people and my family/ friends at risk of what could be a life-threatening illness for them?’”

Sen Const. Arthur reminded all residents to stay at home unless they were travelling for an essential reason.
