A “panicked” driver ran his out of control car along a footpath outside a north Brisbane primary school for more than 30 metres as he fled police before he was nabbed in a citizen’s arrest, a court has heard.
Reece Desmond Anderson, 30, knew he was driving while demerit point suspended when police spotted him near Morayfield State School on Monday, November 25, 2019.
Instead of stopping, Anderson made a getaway in his car but was T-boned by another car when he failed to give way at an intersection causing him to run his car up onto the footpath outside the school.
Magistrate Andrew Hackett heard the collision damaged the steering column in Anderson’s car and as a result it fishtailed and eventually crashed into office buildings on Caboolture River Rd.
The court heard Anderson’ driving was so dangerous onlookers apprehended him right after the crash.
“Your driving, in a word, was appalling,” Magistrate Hackett said.
“You’re lucky you’re not looking at motor vehicle manslaughter, it could have so easily happened.
“You were so easily panicked over what really was a minor matter.”
Anderson pleaded guilty to dangerous operation of a vehicle, driving while demerit point suspended, a driving offence involving registration certificates and possessing dangerous drugs for the November 25 offence.
He also pleaded guilty to another count of driving while demerit point suspended as well as a count of contravening a police direction on November 5.
Anderson was given a head sentence of three months jail suspended for three years for the dangerous operation offence and was disqualified from driving for 12 months.
