A southeast Queensland council has given the all clear for a developer to build a new child care centre in a suburb north of Brisbane, despite resident’s concerns about tree clearing.
Moreton Bay Regional Council unanimously agreed to approve the development application for 54-66 Old Bay Rd, Deception Bay at Tuesday’s council meeting.
Council received 26 submissions in relation to the development, the majority of which raised concerns about the number of trees being cleared.

The council officer stated in the report presented to councillors that approximately 102 trees would be removed, not 359 as first proposed.
“The site is heavily vegetated however the vegetation is not protected nor classified under state mapping or the MBRC Planning Scheme. Despite the initial vegetation clearing plans indicating removal of trees in the northern half of the site (some 359 trees), the proposed extent of clearing is limited to the development footprint of the proposed Child Care Centre. Approximately 102 trees would be removed,” the report read.
The centre, located near two primary schools, is expected to cater for 175 children.
It will also include a 1,628 sqm outdoor play area and 57 car parks.
