A site with close to 400 trees could be partially cleared to make way for a new child care centre north of Brisbane.

Moreton Bay Regional Council planning officers have recommended councillors approve the development application at its meeting on Tuesday.

The application is for a 200-child single storey centre at 54-66 Old Bay Rd, across the road from Deception Bay North State School and around the corner from Christ the King Catholic primary school.

It will include 55 carparking spaces, eight bicycle spaces, a play area.

The site, which is next door to the Deception Bay Dragons Football Club is currently home to 359 trees.

Council officers said approximately 102 trees would be cleared to make way for the centre.

Twenty-six residents objected to the development, many not impressed with plans to remove the trees.

The council report states: “A number of those submissions related to clearing of vegetation across the whole site. With no proposal to remove vegetation in the northern half of the site, the proposed development in the southern half of the site for a Child Care Centre is considered to accord with the intent of the MBRC Planning Scheme. The proposed child care centre is recommended to be approved subject to conditions.”

The application was lodged by DL and Associates Pty Ltd.

Moreton Bay Regional Council is expected to vote on the application at its meeting on Tuesday.
