North Lakes man Manpreet Singh Brar, who stands accused of striking down and killing Kallangur man Ian Seibel while he walked his dog at Anzac Ave late last year, hurried away from the alleged victim’s grieving family after his mention at the Pine Rivers Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
“Prick!” a family friend screamed after Brar, who exited the court from the back entrance to avoid unwanted attention.
Paula Seibel, who was allegedly also hit by the car that day, watched in tears as Brar sprinted down a concrete driveway and hurried into his car.
Brar had appeared at court on an upgraded charge of dangerously operating a vehicle while adversely affected causing death and the pre-existing charge of driving without a license.
He has yet to enter a plea.
Ian and Paula were walking their dog across the intersection when they were hit by the hatchback.
The couple were rushed to hospital, where Ian tragically died from his injuries five days later.
“He left a huge hole in everyone who knew him,” Paula said.
“He was a fantastic and loving person who should not have been stolen from us and the world.”
The upgraded charge levelled against Brar alleges he may have been under the influence of an intoxicating substance while driving the vehicle.
Joe Wicking of Howden Saggers Lawyers appeared on behalf of Brar to request a four week adjournment to finalise his consideration of the brief and consent to the new bench charge sheet.
Brar was released on bail and will reappear in court for a committal mention on March 17.
