Caboolture Square plans new cinema, bowling alley and gaming arcade

It’s the community a stone’s throw from Brisbane where locals have to trek 20km to see a flick, but flashy plans for a new cinema have been revealed — although it will come at the cost of a beloved retailer.

A popular shopping centre north of Brisbane has changed hands and with empty shop fronts to fill, the new owners may be scrapping plans to bring back a beloved department giant to instead offer locals a new cinema, bowling alley, and gaming arcade.

Caboolture Square changed hands in May, 2022, and the new owners and managers say they want to make a mark on the local community.

The centre was purchased by IJ Financial Services Limited, who have appointed First Asset Management to take the centre in a new direction.

The new owners took to Facebook earlier this year and were met with an outpouring from the local community to ‘bring back Kmart’ which closed in June 2021 after 34 years.

Instead, however, the centre has revealed plans to construct a cinema, and gaming arcade to the region which has been without either since the closure of Morayfield Birch Carroll and Coyle (BCC) in April.

A bowling alley is also planned.

“Everything you need to have a great night out with the family or date night, this exciting proposal includes concepts for a Deluxe 6 Cinema, 12-lane 10 pin bowling, and gaming arcade,” the new owners said in a media statement.

“Also included will be a lounge and bar providing food and beverage options for entertainment revellers.

“With the recent closure of neighbouring Morayfield BCC Cinema in April, 2022, after almost two decades, the concepts are timed well.

“If the plan proceeds, locals will have exciting new entertainment options close by and avoid the half-hour commute to see a movie at the next cinema, with the nearest at Redcliffe or North Lakes.”

Caboolture Square has invited shoppers and locals to vote on this new proposal via a Facebook announcement. However, there has been no mention of previous plans to bring back Kmart.

“It’s the perfect time to uncover the opportunity to remodel and remix the Shopping Centre to better service the local community,” the owners said in a media statement.

“Have your say on reshaping the future of Caboolture Square to make it the dominant retail and entertainment hub in the Caboolture area.”
