What to do if you think a child is being abused

A 34-year-old Bray Park man charged with raping his stepdaughter allegedly “couldn’t help himself” and felt “a rush like cocaine”, a court has heard.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was released on bail in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Friday.

He is charged with two counts of rape and five counts of indecent treatment of a child under the age of 16 which is alleged to have occurred on February 17, 2021.

He is also facing two charges of indecent treatment of a child under the age of 16 alleged to have occurred on July 12, 2021, and one count of indecent treatment of a child under the age of 16 alleged to have occurred on an unknown date between April 12, 2021, and June 28, 2021.

The court heard the 34-year-old had previously been granted bail for the offences but was back in custody for allegedly breaching his bail between September 5, 2021, and November 28, 2021.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Karine Evans made an application in court on Friday to have the man’s bail revoked.

She told the court the victim child in the matter had since moved out of her family home in Yarrabilba after her mother had “somewhat abandoned her” and was now supporting the defendant.

“There are still three other children living at that house,” she said.

“The bail as it currently stands allows the defendant to have contact with the mother but not the victim child.

“It used to say no contact with the mother or the child but now that the defendant can have contact with the mother he goes to the address where the other three children live.

“It is the police’s position that his continued attendance at the address endangers the safety of those children because of the confessions or admissions outlined in that witness statement that essentially says he couldn’t help himself in relation to the victim child and it was a rush like cocaine.”

Magistrate Terry Duroux refused her application to revoke bail completely and instead amended his bail with new strict conditions that he must not have contact with any of the four kids and not attend the Yarrabilba residence.

The matters were adjourned for a further mention on January 19, 2022.
