Australia's Growing Drug Crisis

A 39-year-old Deception Bay dad with a lengthy criminal history will spend at least another six weeks behind bars.

Andrew Fraser Gabbert appeared in Redcliffe Magistrates Court on July 23 charged with 60 offences – the majority of which relate to trafficking or supplying dangerous drugs.

Mr Gabbert, via the duty lawyer Farrah Haddad applied for bail.

He had previously attempted to apply for bail on Monday but was advised by Magistrate Mark Bucknall to seek legal advice first.

The court heard Mr Gabbert was arrested on July 17, for allegedly trafficking and supplying methylamphetamine, cannabis and GHB between April 8, 2020, and July 17, 2020.

Police Prosecutor Sergeant Kirstine Bambrick told the court a mobile phone seized by police from Mr Gabbert’s home contained multiple text messages about the sale and purchase of various drugs.

Mr Haddad said his Mr Gabbert was contesting some of the charges and that the evidence supplied by police was not enough to refuse him bail.

“It is just a mistake that all these people think he is the local drug dealer then,” Magistrate Bucknall said, referring to the multiple text messages.

Magistrate Bucknall said the father of seven had a lengthy criminal history and that if found guilty he was likely to serve a significant amount of time behind bars.

He denied the bail application.

The matter has been adjourned until September 7 for a committal mention.
