A meth addict kicked, kneed and punched his 71-year-old father in a drug-fuelled rage, leaving lying on a street.
Beenleigh Magistrate’s Court heard on Thursday, December 21, that Michael Baxter, 48, seriously assaulted his father in the attack on August 15.
The victim had to be taken to hospital by ambulance with serious bruising to his upper body.
The court was told the assault continued even after the frail man fell to the ground and he took a beating to his face and torso.
Magistrate Mac Giolla Ri said the attack was “not one punch, but a prolonged serious assault”.
“You have (had) hospitalised him. Drugs were also involved,” he said.
“The incident was a breach of a good behaviour order made in December, 2018 which was in effect for five years.”
Baxter’s lawyer said the former labourer, a father himself, had a longstanding opiate addiction.
Baxter plead guilty to one count each of serious assault of a person over 60, possessing dangerous drugs and contravention of a domestic violence order.
He was sentenced to 15 months’ jail but with immediate parole eligibility.
