A 38-YEAR-OLD man was handed 11 jail sentences after pleading guilty to 17 charges including stealing groceries, alcohol and petrol across Brisbane.

However, for each concurrent sentence, ranging from one to 12 months, Michael Scott Dummett of Morayfield was told he need only serve the 92 days he had already spent in custody.

Dummett appeared via video link in Sandgate Magistrates Court on Wednesday and pleaded guilty to all charges.

His crimes included stealing groceries from Woolworths Moorooka and Coles Bray Park, and a bottle of vodka from Dan Murphy’s Albany Creek.

Dummett was also charged with attempting to steal coins from Snap Laundromat Moorooka.

He faced two charges of stealing fuel from Kelvin Grove, two of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, and three of receiving registration plates believed to be tainted property.

Drug-related charges included unlawful possession of methamphetamine at Lawnton and failing to properly dispose of a syringe and needle at The Grange.

He was also charged with receiving tainted property (a Medicare card), unlawful possession of a knife in a public place, and contravening a direction without a reasonable excuse.

The final charge was that he breached a condition (not to commit another offence) of an 18-month probation order imposed in July 2019.

Dummett’s solicitor said the time his client had spent in custody “should act as a deterrent to him”.

“During this period he broke up with his partner – his relationship broke down,” the solicitor told the court.

“He was heavily using drugs and had not seen his children for the last two years. He was also homeless for a time.

“He tells me he’s learnt a very good lesson while in custody and he would like to set an example for his kids in the future.”

Magistrate Jennifer Batts convicted Dummett on the charges of receiving tainted property, contravening a direction and unlawful possession of a knife, and imposed no further punishment.

Dummett was fined $250 for breaching the probation order and ordered to pay a total $182.05 restitution for the vodka and fuel.

On all other charges the magistrate imposed concurrent prison sentences ranging from one to 12 months, telling Dummett he need only serve the 92 days he had already spent in custody.

Her sentencing included resentencing for the original charges on which Dummett was placed on probation in 2019 – entering premises with intent and possession of suspected stolen property.

“You’re on a suspended sentence – if you commit further offences you risk going to prison,” the magistrate said.

“There’s a good deal of incentive for you to make the most of your time with parole – for your benefit, for the benefit of family and … the community generally.”
