A group of teens playing a game of “punchies” at Logan Hyperdome on a weekend ended in a split lip, cut eyebrow and a day in court.
Zane Anthony Hansen, 19, pleaded guilty in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on February 6 to one count of assault occasioning bodily harm.
The court heard that on October 28, 2022 at the Hyperdome in Shailer Park, Hansen and a group of teens fought over who was getting a lift in the car.
They were also playing a game of ‘punchies’ where players hit and slap each other.
Hansen was denied a lift home and so he punched one of the boys with both hands, knocking him on the ground and splitting his lip and eyebrow.
Police prosecutor Senior Constable Cody Jones said Hansen was not forthcoming with information to police in an interview.
“He initially told police he had no memory of the incident,” he said.
“Hansen said they were playing ‘punchies’, a game where they hit each other but CCTV footage showed him grabbing the victim from behind and striking him.”
Defence lawyer Divya Raj said Hansen had no criminal history and was extremely remorseful for his actions.
“This was an isolated incident and he hasn’t been in trouble since,” said Mr Raj.
“He does not intend to repeat this behaviour and is remorseful.”
Magistrate Patrina Clohessy accepted Hansen’s plea of guilty as an expression of remorse.
She said the community was concerned with acts of violence and sentenced Hansen to a 12-month probation order.
No conviction was recorded.
