An elderly Logan man run down on a zebra crossing late last week was on a social outing at his local Diggers club, it has emerged.

Leendert Dewaerd, 90, of Woodridge, was walking on a marked pedestrian crossing when he was hit by a car on Blackwood Rd, Woodridge, at 4.30pm on May 4.

Shocked onlookers watched the horrific scene unfold.

Mr Dewaerd was rushed to Brisbane’s Princess Alexandra Hospital in a critical condition with significant head injuries but later died.

“The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, a 23-year-old Woodridge woman, was not physically injured,” a police statement at the time said.

The road was closed for a long period while Queensland Police Service Forensic Crash Unit officers investigated.

A witness to the horror crash said she saw the victim lying on the ground.

“I was walking up the street and saw (him),” she said.

Onlookers were traumatised, as Mr Dewaerd hit the woman’s windscreen and rolled on the road.

Police said they believed the driver did not see him because of the sun, however the incident was still being investigated. The woman has not yet been charged.

The Diggers Club was contacted for comment.

Locals have taken to social media to share their devastation at Mr Dewaerd’s death.

Lesleigh Jane said the incident was horrific.

“So terribly sad... so sorry for the gentleman and his family,” she said.

Jacinta posted: “Absolutely tragic to live to this incredible age and die like this. Rest in peace, sir.”

Rhonda wrote: “Very sad for the family fly high with the angels now.”

Police asked for anyone who witnessed the crash, or has relevant dashcam or CCTV footage, to contact them.
