A Logan man has faced court for his involvement in a terrifying attack where a man was blinded, kidnapped and taken into the bushland where he believed he would die.

Woodridge resident, Beaudy Phillip Bourke, 26, pleaded guilty in Beenleigh District Court to one count of deprivation of liberty — unlawfully obtain/confine, enter dwelling with intent uses/threatens violence while armed and extortion.

The court heard Bourke was at his mother's house in Browns Plains on May 30 in 2020 when he found another man (the victim) smoking drugs with his mother.

The court heard Bourke’s co-offender allegedly threatened the victim for the keys to his motorcycle before stabbing him in the leg and taking the bike.

It was two hours later when Bourke and his co-offender returned to the property seeking a signed receipt for the motorcycle from the victim.

“You came into the room and became a party to these offences,” Judge Craig Chowdhury said.

“You jumped on the bed and tried to kick the complainant.

“You punched him in the eye, and your co-offender said that he knew somewhere out in the bush where you could take him.

“(The victim) was forced down the stairs and out in the back seat of the car.

“You told another person to get sunglasses and cardboard to blind him.

“You used your elbow to push into the complainant’s neck.”

The court heard the car was driven to an area, where it was bogged in mud, before Bourke told the complainant to start walking down the bushland track.

“He made his way from the bushland to a house where he was able to raise help,” the crown prosecutor said.

“It is clear that the complainant was terrified for his life, he was hysterical.

“He was concerned when the ambulance got there it wasn’t real, he was a mess of a human being.

“The complainant was injured, he was bleeding profusely, there was a use of a gun and threat.”

Bourke’s lawyer said her client was not involved in the extortion or the organisation of the attack.

“In the victims mind it’s one event, legally my client is there because it is his mother in the house,” she said.

“He plays no part in any of this, it’s only when he’s told the complainant uses drugs for sexual favours he’s involved.

“He’s truly sorry from the bottom of his heart.

“He was in a dark place at that time in his life.

“He wants to say he’s sorry to the victim and the pain he must have caused him.”

Judge Craig Chowdhury said his behaviour was concerning.

“This is appalling offending,” Mr Chowdhury said.

“To rob a man of his property, using threats and physical force to sign over a receipt.

“He was then detained and was terrified he would be taken somewhere and killed.

“The community is getting sick and tired of these offences in this state.”

Bourke was convicted and given a head sentence of three years and six months, with a parole eligibility date of Friday, February 3.

His 162 days spent in pre-sentence custody was declared as time served.

Convictions were recorded.
