A Logan bikie has been jailed for his involvement in a terrifying invasion of a young family’s home where a scared mother armed herself with a knife to protect her baby.

Logan man Jhett Carl Knight, pleaded guilty in Beenleigh District Court on Thursday, February 2, to one count of armed robbery with actual violence, one count of possessing schedule one or two drugs, one count of enter dwelling by break using threats/violence while armed in company and two counts of common assault.

The court heard Knight was one of seven men from the Mongrel Mob allegedly involved the home invasion in Kingston on September 24, 2021.

The victim, allegedly a previous member of the gang, had said he wanted to leave but refused to pay the $5000 leaving fee, the court heard.

The group of seven men allegedly went to the house demanding the cash.

“He (the victim) responded that he couldn’t afford that and they asked him for his car,” the crown prosecutor said.

“(The victim and his wife) retreated into the house and he grabbed a large hunting knife for protection.

“The men kicked in the door and the members of the group entered.

“(The wife) armed herself with the knife to protect herself and her child who she was holding, which was a baby.”

The men told her to put down the knife, saying they would take their son’s Xbox if they did not give them the money, the court heard.

“They tried to take a laptop, before one of the members said, ‘come on, cap wants him smashed’,” the prosecutor said.

“One member struck her in her right ear causing pain and ringing and members of the group, including the defendant, assaulted him, punching him.

“(The victim’s) son came out of the bathroom crying, one member of the group threatened to stab his son.”

The court heard the group ran from the property when they heard police sirens before being intercepted where Knight was found with 1.3g of cannabis and recordings of the incident on his phone.

The court heard they filmed the ordeal for their “cap”.

“He committed this as part of a hoard of gang members, where children were present,” the prosecutor said.

Knight’s lawyer said her client only played a minor role in the offence.

“He wasn’t a major mover in this matter, he was a minor mover,” she said.

“He’s not involved in planning, organising, anything like that, he’s simply a member.

“He is genuinely remorseful.”

Judge Chowdhury said the family was traumatised after the attack.

“One of the co-accused threatened him and said, ‘do you want to get stabbed, it’s time to get stabbed’,” Judge Chowdhury said.

“This was just sheer criminal thuggery and a gang attack on innocent members of the community.

“Anyone who is associated with a bikie gang should understand they are nasty organisations where violence is a way of life.”

Knight was convicted and given a head sentence of four years’ jail, suspended for four years after serving 497 days.

He was sentenced to a mandatory seven-year jail sentence on one charge of enter dwelling by break, while armed in company - serious organised crime, with a control order imposed.

Convictions were recorded.
