Logan is fast cementing its place as the drone delivery capital of Australia, with residents ordering everything from hardware to hot chooks.

Drone company spreads it Wing delivery service across Logan

Logan is fast cementing its place as one the drone delivery capitals of Australia, with over 50,000 deliveries so far this year placing it just behind big player Canberra.

Drone delivery service Wing has been active in the Logan community since 2019, but popularity has surged across the region amid the Covid crisis and associated restrictions.

Wing, a subsidiary of Alphabet, which owns Google, used the Logan suburbs of Marsden and Crestmead as test fields when it started its Queensland service in 2019.

Now, Wing delivers to 19 suburbs in Logan, including Beenleigh, Browns Plains, Crestmead, Kingston, Park Ridge, Regents Park, Slacks Creek, and Underwood

The Logan businesses with food available via drone delivery include Extraction Artisan Coffee, Friendly Grocer, Browns Plains Hardware, Sushi Hub, Kensington Fair Bakery, Blackout Coffee, Sweetie Darling Candy, PetZoo, glamaCo, Rege’s Hot box, and LSKD.

Wing spokesman Jesse Suskin said Logan was one of the busiest areas in the country.

With the click of a button locals can order anything from batteries, hammers, milk, bread and other groceries delivered to the front door via the air.

The drone flies to the address and then lowers a cable with the package at the end.

“We’ve seen a significant increase in use of our on-demand drone delivery service in southeast Queensland this year. Wing has already made more than 50,000 deliveries to the Logan community in 2021, with almost 4,500 deliveries in a single week, during the most recent Queensland COVID-19 lockdown in early August,” Mr Suskin said.

In the past year, Wing customers in Logan have:

● ordered more than 10,000 cups of fresh barista-made coffee;

● had more than 1,000 loaves of bread delivered to their home, saving a trip to the shops;

● kept break time interesting as kids transitioned to remote-learning with more than 1,700 snack packs ordered for morning and afternoon tea;

● tucked into more than 2,700 sushi rolls to beat the lunchtime cravings; and

● made more than 1,200 hot chooks fly, just in time for family dinner.

“In April this year, as residents were asked to stay at home in the lead up to Easter, we delivered more than 250 chocolate eggs, bunnies, and hot cross bun packs to customers in Logan,” Mr Suskin said.

“As the Ekka was cancelled, we delivered more than 500 showbags, dagwood dogs, fairy floss, and strawberry ice creams to give customers a little taste of Queensland’s favourite show from home.

“Wing also provided delivery beyond residential homes for the first time in 2021. As Logan residents returned to working from the office, we started delivering to workplaces to give staff from selected local businesses access to the convenience of drone delivery at work.”

Wing drones have a wingspan of about 1.5 metres, weigh about 4.8 kg, and can carry packages around 1.5 kg at speeds of more than 110km/h.

Their fastest delivery time to date, from order to delivery at the customer’s house, was 2 minutes and 47 seconds.

To begin with there were noise complaints in Logan, until Wing technicians modified the craft. Wing spokesman Jesse Suskin said the noise is about 40 decibels, almost half the noise level of a lawnmower.

He said the company would continue to improve its service, expanding its merchant and product offerings and moving beyond Logan.
