Teens turn to Instagram for stolen car racket

Gangs of tearaway teens are using an Instagram page to brag about their stolen car conquests and to organise how and when to meet up to swap them.

Instagram page BrisbaneThefts first hit social media in March last year, with a video showing a luxury car clocking speeds of up to 178km/h.

Since then, the site has gained more than 13,600 followers, from 201 posts including videos of minors driving luxury cars.

Another video shows three youths in a Lexus swerving between traffic with a bag of lollies in the console revealing an unrestrained youth in the back seat smoking.

Other posts show two teens sitting in a loungeroom with a machete, bongs and tins of baked beans.

The site was brought to police attention last month, when the administrator of Instagram pages in Logan was searching for missing animals and stumbled across the posts.

An administrator of 10 Facebook and Instagram pages for lost animals, who was not able to be named for legal reasons, said youths were using the BrisbaneTheft site to co-ordinate meetings to swap the stolen vehicles.

Carparks at the Hyperdome, Grand Central Plaza, Riverlink Shopping Centre at Ipswich and at the Gold and Sunshine Coasts were allegedly being used as meeting spots so the young thieves can swap the stolen cars to make tracing more difficult.

“The cars are then driven to new areas, miles away from where they were stolen, so that they are not recognised,” the Instagram administrator said.

“From some of the videos, the kids drive the stolen cars at speeds of more than 170km/h and trash them doing burnouts before posting it online — it’s ridiculous.”

Queensland Police recorded more than 8230 thefts of vehicles in the year to April with a further 2650 cases from Logan and 4152 reported at the Gold Coast.

This week, Nerang police arrested two juveniles after swooping on the notorious Foxwell Rd at Coomera.
