An explosive scene at a Logan dog park which began with an argument over a stray volleyball, has escalated into a gang bashing where disgusting abuse was hurled at a pregnant victim.
Beenleigh Magistrates Court heard on April 2 that Veronica Jasmine Kinraid’s younger sister was at Ewing Park, Woodridge on November 27, last year.
A group of people were playing volleyball when the ball went out of the area and landed in the adjacent dog park.
One of the dogs bit the ball and an abusive scuffle broke out, heard the court.
Kinraid’s sister phoned her and she came to her aid where a group of women bashed a woman, stomped on her and kicked her.
The court heard at one point the victim told them she was pregnant and an unknown member of the group shockingly yelled “kill the baby”.
The victim suffered lacerations and abrasions and Kinraid, 25, pleaded guilty to one count of assault occasioning bodily harm in company.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Stephen Cochrane said Kinraid had a minor criminal history but this was a serious act of violence.
“There was stomping and kicking to the victim in a group of people, it is a serious act of violence,” he said.
The court heard Kinraid formerly worked at Sunnybank McDonald’s and had five siblings.
She immigrated to Australia from New Zealand in 2003 and recently relocated to Springsure in the Central Highlands Region.
Kinraid wrote a letter of apology to the victim which she handed to police, to pass on to the victim.
Magistrate Terry Duroux said this was concerning, cowardly behaviour.
“I can understand sticking up for family members but your behaviour was nothing short of deplorable,” he said.
“There’s a problem in the community of people taking the law into their own hands.
“The stomping and comments about the baby were absolutely appalling.”
Kinraid was fined $1800 and ordered to pay half of that in compensation to the victim.
No conviction was recorded.
