A court has heard how a Logan man’s drug addiction ruined his life as he prepares to spend Christmas behind bars.
Tyler Mark Wilkinson, 24, pleaded guilty in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on December 20, 2022 to 19 charges including 10 stealing offences and three breaches of bail.
The court heard that from July 28 to November 1, Wilkinson stole items from shops across the Logan area, including Browns Plains, Upper Mt Gravatt and Shailer Park.
The court heard the total value of items stolen was roughly $3000 and included bikes, clothes and luggage.
Prosecution said Wilkinson committed the offences while on parole and was a repeat offender.
“He is a recidivist offender, he keeps reoffending and this was only two months after committing like offences,” they said.
Wilkinson’s defence said his client’s behaviour was because of his addiction to methamphetamine, a drug he used daily
The court heard Wilkinson found himself homeless, transient, going from house to house and had difficulties purchasing clothes.
He was stealing clothes and luggage in an attempt to pawn the items and also found an iPhone then got in touch with owner and requested a finders fee.
The other items he stole were a bike and watch.
Magistrate Ron Kilner said Wilkinson had an unflattering criminal history.
“Your history does not do you any favours and these actions do not show someone who is serious about overcoming their drug addiction,” he said,
“While the court have sympathy for people who have a drug addiction, it evaporates when you start stealing from the community.”
Wilkinson was sentenced to 12 months in prison with a parole eligibility date of February 20, 2023. He had served 49 days already of pre-sentence custody.
Wilkinson was also ordered to pay a total of $3052 in restitution to businesses including House and David Jones.
