A father accused of holding a person hostage, torturing them and having them transfer ownership of their car has been granted bail by a Logan court after he disputed the allegations and asked for a chance to be released from custody.

Ty Jeffrey Hammant, 35, applied for bail in Beenleigh District Court on Monday after being denied bail last year in the Beenleigh Magistrates Court.

The Logan Village man was charged with unlawful wounding, deprivation of liberty, extortion, assault occasioning bodily harm while armed and torture after an alleged incident on February 21 last year. He has indicated he will fight the charges

Mr Hammant had served 396 days in pre-sentence custody.

He asked Judge Craig Chowdhury for a chance to be released while he contested the charges at a trial.

Mr Hammant, who was self-represented, told the court he struggled with the overcrowded prison and was working to overcome drug addiction.

He said he was willing to comply with any bail conditions and report for parole every day.

“Not many people would be willing to sign in and report every day if they were going to evade the law,” Mr Hammant said.

Prosecution opposed bail and said the potential of interfering with witnesses was a risk.

They said Mr Hammant also had previous failures to appear in court.

Judge Craig Chowdhury acknowledged the charges were disputed and it would take a long time to get a trial date.

“It would take until the end of the year to get a trial date, but the issue is why should I give you bail,” he said.

Mr Hammant was granted bail and the matter will next be mentioned on April 28.
