Truck driver remembered as ‘one of a kind’ following fatal crash at Tamborine

The 33-year-old Flagstone truck driver who died in a crash at Tamborine yesterday is being remembered as ‘one of a kind’ by his family and friends.

Family and friends of the 33-year-old Flagstone man who died in a truck crash at Tamborine have shared touching tributes to the much-loved truck driver.

Damien Otto, was driving along Waterford Tamborine Rd, near Logan, at about 5.40am on Monday.

Initial police investigations indicate the truck veered off the road and collided with a tree before rolling down an embankment.

Mr Otto sadly died at the scene.

The 33-year-old, a much-loved son, uncle, partner and friend, grew up in Goondiwindi and attended the local state high school before moving to Flagstone.

Mr Otto was an interstate driver with Williamson Bros Furniture Removals.

He had just left his Flagstone home and was on the way to the Gold Coast when the incident occurred.

Owner Damien Clegg said Mr Otto had worked for the company for almost two years.

“He was one of the best I’ve ever seen,” Mr Clegg said.

“His work ethic, the way he looked after the truck, loaded, and drove, the way he presented himself, everything.

“He was a mate as well, he would come into the office every week to say hello and talk to everyone.”

Mr Clegg said his 30 plus colleagues were all devastated by the news.

“They are all struggling and suffering a fair bit,” he said. “It will be a long road.”

Friends and family took to social media, devastated by the news.

One family member, who wished not be named, said: “He was truly one of a kind, with such a big sense of humour and a big heart”.

Work colleague Madelaine McGovern wrote: “He was such a hard working, funny, easy going person”.

Another friend simply wrote: “heartbroken”.

Police investigations into the crash are continuing. Anyone with information or dashcam footage is asked to phone Police Link on 131 444.
