A young Loganlea dad has landed in court after hitting his ex-girlfriend’s dad in the back of the head with a star picket and fracturing his skull during an vicious fight.

Trent Gregory Kitchin, 22, pleaded guilty in district court at Beenleigh on Friday to assault occasioning bodily harm while armed.

The court heard Kitchin, who had been 19 at the time of the offence, fractured the skull of his ex-girlfriend’s dad during a violent altercation at his Greenbank home on April 30, 2019.

The 47-year-old male victim arrived at Kitchin’s home with a group of people at about 6pm to confront him about harassing his daughter after their break-up.

The court heard one of the men in the group had been trying to force entry into the house and Kitchin approached the his ex’s dad from behind and struck him in the head with a star picket.

The impact left a large gash on the victim’s head, blood was running down his face and he fell to the ground.

The 47-year-old was taken to Logan Hospital where he received treatment for a 5cm deep laceration and skull fracture.

The court heard the victim suffered from memory loss, headaches and dizziness.

Judge Craig Chowdhury said Kitchin had relevant criminal history including a charge of assault occasioning bodily harm.

“You could have given him permanent brain damage so you should count your lucky stars,” he said.

He was given a suspended sentence of two years imprisonment and the 218 days he spent on remand was declared as time served.
