A Logan dad was caught red-handed by police as he attempted to steal copper wiring from a business in a two-man heist, a court has heard.

Beenleigh Magistrates Court heard on June 14 that Shane William Weir met a man on August 13 last year while drinking and the pair made a plan to steal copper wiring.

The unknown man and Weir targeted a business in Berrinba at midnight on August 13.

Weir waited outside while the other man entered the building.

The court heard 5m of copper cable was passed outside to Weir before police arrived and stopped them.

Weir, 52, was found wearing gardening gloves and holding a flathead screwdriver, the court heard.

The incident was also captured on CCTV footage.

The other man has not been charged by police.

On October 9 last year Weir was searched by police at his home where they found 0.5g of cannabis and a yellow Stanley knife, the court heard.

The Woodridge father pleaded guilty to attempted stealing, possession of dangerous drugs and possession of a knife.

Magistrate Tracy Mossop said Weir had a good character reference from an employer who said he was a hard worker and in a trusted leadership position.

“This is a very impressive reference and I also acknowledge your early plea of guilty,” she said.

“You had gardening gloves and a screwdriver, so there was a certain level of planning to the offending.”

Weir was sentenced to seven months’ prison and immediately placed on parole.
