A 47-year-old truck driver accused of driving dangerously and causing the death of Aaron Young on a quiet street in Beenleigh will face trial.
Shane Steven Crofts, 47, appeared in Beenleigh Magistrates Court charged with dangerously operating a vehicle causing death.
Police prosecutor Tim Wise told the court it’s alleged Crofts was driving a truck down Sunrise St, Beenleigh when he failed to manoeuvre past a parked four-wheel drive and trailer on the side of the road and hit the trailer on May 16, 2020.
He said Boronia Heights man Aaron Young, 30, had been working in between the trailer and the four-wheel-drive at the time of the collision, and allegedly sustained serious head injuries from the impact and died at the scene.
“There’s evidence to suggest that the trailer and car have been pushed forward about two meters,” Mr Wise said.
“It’s our submission the deceased has then, due to that significant jolt … had a significant collision with the roadway causing injuries to the head, as described in the autopsy, and other bruising around his body as well.”
The court heard that the sole witness of the incident was Crofts nephew who had been driving in a separate car.
Police prosecutor Wise read out parts of the statement he provided to police in court: “I was out of my car ran back to my uncle’s truck, as I was running uncle Shane got out of his truck and was yelling ‘F**k, f**k, f**k! There was a guy! There was a guy!”
Mr Young’s parents, Craig and Elizabeth Young, previously described their son as a kind person who loved cars and was always helping out at their family-owned business Dyno Hire at Logan Village.
The matter was committed for trial at the district court in Beenleigh on a later date.
