Gympie's bus stops: Easy navigation, or a sign of madness?

More than 300 bus stops across the state will be upgraded with new shelters and better access with public transport users in Logan and Sunshine Coast to be the biggest beneficiaries.

Logan City Council undertook a massive bus shelter replacement scheme in 2017 and will now get funds to upgrade access to 75 stops along with money to put shelters on 14.

Sunshine Coast commuters will have shelters installed at 20 stops and better access at 40 bus stops with money to be spent on improving paths, handrails, ramps, boarding devices and signs.

Sunshine Coast resident Thomas Robins played a role in getting the funding to improve bus stop access.

He has lobbied the government with his concerns about the lack of wheelchair constraints on buses and the lack of ramps to get on and off a bus safely.

Ipswich will get shelters at eight stops and the Gold Coast will get 16 new shelters.

Transport Minister Mark Bailey said $4.5 million will be spent making 205 stops more accessible and putting shelters on 105.

Ten councils will receive $2.5 million to improve accessibility at 190 bus stops, splitting the upgrade costs with the state government.

The remaining funding, $2 million, will go to 12 local governments as part of a program to build bus shelters.

Mr Bailey said it was important to make sure bus travel was accessible to everyone and to improve the experience to encourage more to use public transport.

“Whether you’re in Brisbane or Bundaberg, Townsville or Toowoomba, these upgrades will

be coming your way over the next 12 months,” he said.

“We’re always looking for ways to improve the customer experience of our public transport

system.”

Councils will deliver the works.

In 2017, Logan council ripped out more than 60 bus shelters after a statewide upgrade program started.

The shelters were sold off to private buyers including a horse riding school and for school pick-up zones and sporting fields.
