LOOKING for some shelter or shade from the Queensland sun? Logan City Council may be able to help.
Council is poised to write off about 60 obsolete bus shelters, currently stored at council’s Munruben depot after council decided to upgrade shelters to include disabled access.
The proposal drew interest from councillors wanting to offer the shelters to community groups.
Division 7 councillor Laurie Smith said the idea to give away the shelters followed requests from a riding school in June.
He said people inquired after seeing the shelters stacked at the depot.
Last week’s City Treasury meeting decided to investigate whether the shelters could be used by council. Any deemed to be surplus would be available for community organisations.
Committee chair Division 11 councillor Trevina Schwarz warned councillors the bus shelters were not TransLink-approved bus shelters and there were strict guidelines about bus shelters in urban areas.
Suggestions for the shelters included using them in school pick-up zones, on sporting fields and at community organisations.
“How the bus shelters are distributed across the city will be a later decision for this committee,” an officer told the meeting. “Once we have determined how many bus shelters are required for each division, then we can move forward.”
