What to do if you think a child is being abused

A former painter from Tamborine with a disturbing history of child abuse has landed back in court after raping and photographing a seven-year-old girl.

Ray Anthony Terare, 49, pleaded guilty at district court in Beenleigh on Wednesday to four charges, including indecent treatment of a child under 16, making child exploitation material, possessing child exploitation material and rape.

The court heard the man snuck into the bedroom of a 7-year-old girl one night in 2020, and told her not to tell anyone or she would not get her tablet device.

Terare performed vile acts on her while taking photos.

The court heard the man kept the photos on his Google Cloud account, which was later discovered by the child’s mother and she alerted police.

Judge Craig Chowdhury said Terare had a “long and concerning relevant criminal history”, including being sentenced for six counts of unlawful carnal knowledge of a child under 16 in 2001.

“These are extremely serious offences,” he said.

“The child was entitled to feel safe … and you simply took advantage of the situation and raped her for your own perverted pleasure.”

Judge Chowdhury sentenced him to three and a half years imprisonment with a parole eligibility date on January 20, 2022.

He declared the 544 days Terare had spent on remand as time served.
